Final Results: 4/17/2017

Well, as I reported yesterday, my 46-day Lenten Challenge ended and I did all of the weigh-ins and blood pressure checks and all of that.  So, without further ado, I will get to the final results:

To the left is me after.  The pic to the right is the very first one I ever did.  Wore the same shirt, and I think it’s pretty obvious the shirt fits a lot better, and I definitely lost weight in my face.

So, how did I celebrate Easter?  Not kidding…we spent time with the kids, and invited friends over for Easter dinner.  I did start the morning by going to pick up our dinner.  Having just gotten back into town, we knew we wouldn’t want to cook, so we ordered the Easter Feast from Boston Market.  While out, my wife asked me to get breakfast and the kids wanted Burger King!  So, my first official meal after this diet was the Burger King Egg-normous breakfast burrito.  It was huge and delicious, but I could only east half of it.  Oh, and I drank a cup of hazelnut coffee too.  I have really missed that in the mornings.

So, that took me to starting the heating factor of our Easter Dinner and making a couple of other sides like a crock pot green bean casserole.  But, I did have to eat lunch too, so for that, I ate the rest of my wife’s PF Chang’s Hot and Sour soup from last night, and chased it down with my first non-Heller Bock in 46 days.  It was my own homebrew.  I drank a “BadAss LAAD” Belgian Citrus Wheat beer I brew in honor of my brother-in-law, Major Lenny Niedosik, USMC, who started off in the 2d LAAD Battalion.

For dinner, well, I ate ham, white corn, mashed potatoes and gravy and stuffing.  It was all great food!  My awesome wife also provided me with my favorite Easter candy…Jelly Beans!

Ok…Ok…I know, you all are saying…HOW MUCH WEIGHT DID YOU LOSE?  Don’t worry, I am getting there.  However, this was about way more than that.  Remember, I also said this was my Journey to Get Closer to God Through Beer.  This Journey really made me realize how strong my Faith was because there is no way I would have finished this had it not been for the fact this was my Lenten Promise to God.  So, over the course of all this, I came to a deep yearning to finally act on my desire to serve the Lord.  So, I have begun the process to apply through the Charlotte Diocese to be able to become a Deacon of the Catholic Church.  I truly feel my calling is to serve the Lord and the Church.

Ok…so how did this whole thing end?  Well, if you remember on that first day, I also showed my blood pressure, taken at a local CVS Pharmacy.  So, today, I drove back to that same location and tested my blood pressure again on the same machine.  On the left is my blood pressure on Easter Sunday, 4/16/2017.  On the right was Day 1, 3/1/2017.

There you see it…34 points less on top and 10 points less on the bottom.  So, while my wife would like me to get the top number down some more, it is still a great improvement in just 46 days.  As for the increase in pulse, she attributes that to my being out and about that morning, picking up the dinner, and being dehydrated from the beer diet.

Well, you’ve made it to the end…So, what about the weight?

If you remember, I started this weighing 277.4 and before I left for vacation with the family over the final week, I was at 244.4.  But how did it end???

So, in 46 days, I lost 43 pounds…yes, 43 pounds.  I am still in awe and have become so thankful to those who supported me and even the many who have told me they found me to be an inspiration and were amazed that I actually stuck it out.  Where do I go from here?  Well, I don’t know yet, but I do know that I have to continue to watch my health and I certainly want to make sure I never gain the weight back.  I hope you’ll follow me on my Journey through the rest of my life as I begin my next blog:

I will be getting that up and running in the next few days.  But until then…I leave you with one final picture, my t-shirt to celebrate this Journey…

See you at The Houseman Chronicles!

Easter Sunday:  4/16/2017

It is all over, but I will post details and results tomorrow.   Today is not about how this Journey ended.  Today is about celebrating our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us.

Happy Easter Everyone!  Until tomorrow…

Lent Day 46: 4/15/2017

The end is here!  We got back home today.  Done unpacking, grocery shopping and getting my awesome wife her dinner.  With the final weigh-in tomorrow,  I am not eating tonight.

But here it is…8pm…the last beer of this saga.  Josephsbrau (Trader Joe’s)  Heller Bock…#218!  So there it is…218 of the same beer for 46 days!

If only the app gave some kind of marathon badge for that type of dedication!
Weigh-in, photos, and blood pressure check tomorrow!

Lent Day 45: 4/14/2017

We went to Busch Gardens again today for the last time.  My body is in some severe pain.  After we left the park, I took the family to Cracker Barrel for their final Friday Lenten fish dinner.  I say their and drank a glass of water.  I really wanted to put some lemon or lime in the water, but thought that might constitute cheating.  This close to the end, I didn’t want to take a chance.

Tonight, we took the kids to a Build-a-Bear event at the hotel which was pretty cool.  Then we took them to roast S’mores one more time.  I am absolutely exhausted, but honestly, I am so excited too.  Tomorrow is the drive back.  For me, that will be easy.  I am on the verge of completing this Lenten discovery, and I have learned so much.

Until tomorrow…

Lent Day 44: 4/13/2017

It was a great day on vacation.  The temperature was perfect and we beat the traffic to the theme park.  The kids had a great day.

This evening the kids had a phenomenal smelling cheese pizza and then we took them to roast some S’mores.   It was a really tough day to pass up on pizza and S’mores.  Only 2 more days to go!

Until tomorrow…

Lent Day 43: 4/12/2017

Well, we didn’t do any theme parks today.  Instead, we took the kids to the Colonial Triangle of Colonial Williamsburg,  Jamestowne, and Yorktown.   The kids are still too young to really understand the significance of the places we visited.  I did refrain from buying a sampler 6-pack of authentic  Colonial Williamsburg brewed beer.  It was $15.95 for the 6-pack and I still feel guilty for buying the other 6-pack last night, even though I won’t drink any of it until after Lent ends.

You may be asking about this being Weigh-in Wednesday.  Obviously, there is no update.  Since I am traveling, I didn’t bring the scale.  So, no clue how I am doing and we will all learn together on Sunday morning.  Only 3 more days to go!

Until tomorrow…

Lent Day 42: 4/11/2017

It has been an incredibly trying day.  My body is in incredible pain as the bed in the hotel is so uncomfortable I can’t even begin to describe it.   It was also crazy hot and crowded today.  My son and my wife both started feeling sick by the end of the day.

I had to go to the grocery store, and I bought a mix and match 6-pack of beers from local Virginia breweries I can get back home.  I won’t drink them, but I am taking that home as my souvenir.

Only 4 days to go, and truly, it feels like I am going through Hell…

Until tomorrow…

Lent Day 41: 4/10/2017

Today, I am hurting.  The bed at our hotel is horrible and I am walking so much.  The terrain at Busch Gardens Williamsburg is no joke.  There is no Bock Beer on premises so I am having to continue throughout the day with only water.

My body is physically really sore.  I mean, it is so sore I can’t even get the pain I am in out of mind.  The only thing that is keeping me going now and giving in to want to eat something is the fact I know there are only 5 more days to go.

Until tomorrow…

Lent Day 40: 4/9/2017

What an incredibly hectic but fun day!  We took the kids to Busch Gardens today.  My feet are killing me.  I drank 2 Heller Bocks before leaving for the park and nothing but water while there.  I can’t believe honestly that I didn’t cave in at the park, but I held strong!  Today is Day 40, and there are only 6 more days to go!!!

Until tomorrow!

Lent Day 39: 4/8/2017

Sorry I didn’t get this published last night, but it was a very long day.  I got up at 3:30am so I could be at church for my 4am Eucharistic Adoration shift.  After getting home, it was time to get ready for the kids’ soccer games.  There games last until nearly 11am.

After that, we ran home, got the kids baths, fed them lunch, and drove nearly 350 miles for their Spring Break vacation.  Where did we go???  Busch Gardens Williamsburg!

Yes, I am having to survive the final week of this Lenten Challenge not only on vacation, but surrounded by glorious theme park good!  Ugh!  The biggest thing keeping my sanity is realizing all the money I will save since I can’t personally eat.

As you know, this was also a Saturday, and that would normally be my date night meal with my wife.  Due to the circumstances,  we obviously didn’t have a date night.  However, I did have a meal.  Not wanting to just have to throw away a lot of the food that was in the fridge at home that wouldn’t hold for a week, I made my Saturday night meal from that.   I turned it all into a massive salad.   See the picture below.  I could only eat about a third of it and didn’t even get a chance to start eating until around 9:30pm.  It was delicious though.

Ok…I need to go for now.  Only 7 more days to go!!!  Until the next post…
